How Do I Get Employers to Notice My Resume and Call Me

How Do I Get Employers to Notice My Resume and Call MeNotice My Resume and Call MeHow Do I Get Employers to Notice My Resume and Call MeRick Saias post yesterday (Dude, Wheres My Job? ...)listed five typical reasons a recent grad might be having trouble finding that first job. Coincidentally, as Rick was crafting that post, a reader named Jen G. left a comment on an older blog post, asking a closely related question.Jen is a new graduate who has posted her resume on various online job boards.Unfortunately, she wrote, I have rarely been called back from a site that I have posted my resume on. What do I need to do in order to get employers to notice my resume so that I get called back?Since this seems to be a hot topic, Ive added a few more tips for Jen and anyone else whos wondering the same thing.Actively Pursue the JobsPosting your resume for public viewing on web sites like Monster.com or CareerBuilder.com is a good first step, but its a passive method of job searching. You have no power over whether anyone ever reads your resume or chooses to call you after reading it.Only IF an employer uses those sites for recruiting, and only IF your qualifications match their keywords, and only IF they read your resume and decide it sounds like a good fit will you ever get a call. Thats a lot of ifs.In addition, a resume posted online is, by nature, a one-size-fits-all resume, not targeted to the specific needs of a particular employer. So leave the resume online, because you never know. But meanwhile, make your job search active, and take the power back into YOUR hands.Check ALL the Job Boards at OnceGo to a site such as Indeed.com or Simplyhired.com, which are job board aggregators, meaning they search ALL the job sites for you (including Monster, CareerBuilder, company web sites, local newspapers, etc.).Select the keywords that are likely to be in the title or job description of your desired position, and do a search. You can narrow the search by zip code and other cri teria. You can even save your search criteria and set up a job search agent that will keep checking these sites for you daily or weekly, and email you any matches. But again, keep it active. If youre not getting good results, try different keywords or expand your search area.Tailor Each Application to the EmployerWhen you find a job that interests you, edit your resume and cover letter so they address exact keywords and phrases you found in the job description. For example, lets say theyre looking for a Senior Office Manager and your resume shows youre a Senior administrator responsible for office management. Those mean the same thing, but youll have better luck if you edit your resume to match the employers terminology. You need to do that each and every time you apply for a specific job. So youll have one basic resume and cover letter, but youll tweak them for every employer. You may end up with 20 or more versions, each slightly different. Its a pain, but its necessary. And finally, we hope youll backtrack through The Blog and Career Cornerfor lots of other hints on how to conduct an active job search that will give you the best chance of landing your dream job.

Specifically, they include Women facing greater work/life balance challenges than men, as they attempt to bear children while also going through grueling training processes and maintaining intense work schedulesOngoing pay deficits between women and men for same or similar services, even when identical educational backgrounds and skills are representedEven with an increase in women in academic and leadership positions, it is difficult for women to find mentors and support as they apply for and make their way through medical school. A Positive Perspective on the Future 2015-2016 President of the Association of Women Surgeons, Dr. A malia Cochran, gave a speech on the status of women in positions of leadership in medical schools. Her perspectives on statistical change ...The most recent data thats available to us does show that 8 percent of full professors of surgery are women and sixteen percent of associate professors of surgery are women so we are still sorely underrepresented at the more senior levels of surgical education and academic surgery in the United States. She continues hopefully, However, the one place where weve seen tremendous growth even in the last three years has been in the number of chairs of departments of surgery. In 2014 we started the year with four women chairs of departments of surgery in the United States and Im delighted to share that as of February 29 of this year we now have 14 women who have been appointed to chairmanships in the US. Cochran concludes her speech echoing the same hopeful message carried forward by trailblazing women in physician studies since the days of Dr. Eliza beth Blackwell, This obviously represents a dramatic increase in our numbers and its a very exciting time for women in leadership. Im very hopeful that during the course of my professional lifetime we will reach a point where a woman surgeon is simply a surgeon.

Publishing Advice from Jeanette Perez of HarperCollins

Publishing Advice from Jeanette Perez of HarperCollinsPublishing Advice from Jeanette Perez of HarperCollinsKnowing that editors can offer some of the best advice on how to publish novels and short story collections, I arranged an interview with Jeanette Perez, Associate Editor for the HarperCollins and Harper Perennial imprints. Perez cut her teeth at HarperCollins after finishing grad school, and has acquired titles such as Polly, by Amy Bryant, The Yacoubian Building, by Alaa Al Aswany, and Promise Not to Tell, by Jennifer McMahon. Q What kind of fiction do you primarily acquire? Jeanette Perez Though Im starting to expand my list into nonfiction, such as narrative nonfiction, memoir, and pop culture, I mainly acquire fiction. In general, I would love to acquire more literary fiction, womens fiction, and fiction representing other cultures such as Latin American fiction. AC What do editors look for in both authors and submissions? JP Of course, we all want something thats written well, but the book also has to have a hook thats easy to pitch. Much of my job as an editor is selling the book in-house to our publicity, marketing, and sales teams. If I can present the book to them concisely and give them a hook they can use when they are selling the book to accounts, the book has that much better of a gunst der stunde in the marketplace. As for what I look for in an author, its always nice to have an author who is connected to the book world in some way. Also, its wonderful to have an author whos willing to spend some of their own time marketing the book by going to bookstores and introducing themselves or surfing the Internet for websites where we could promote the book. Some of our more successful authors have been great about blogging on their websites and constantly refreshing their MySpace pages so that their networks continue to grow. AC How many first-time novelists do you publish each year? JP Lately, our paperback imprint Harper Perennial is where many of our first-time authors have been getting published. The general sense is that readers are more willing to take a weg on a new author in paperback, where the prices are a little lower. I personally think the paperback original is a great way for an author to gain a following, and as their readership grows, perhaps with their second or third book, they can make the jump to hardcover. AC How finished should manuscripts be before authors begin to submit them to publishers? JP It really depends book to book. Sometimes a manuscript comes in pretty clean and the editing process is more of a polishing process. While other times, you may buy a book based on half a manuscript and then really work with the author line-by-line once they deliver the whole thing. But normally, if you buy something thats incomplete or needs a lot of work, youre sold on the story or the book has a highly commercial pitch. AC Do you recommend that authors get agents before submitting their novels? JP I know autho rs hate the idea of giving an agent a cut of whats often a small advance to begin with, but agents are a necessary part of the process. First, its their job to know the editors and their interests, so rather than you sending your literary novel to an editor who buys science books because you saw their name somewhere, an agent will know exactly which editor is best suited for your book. Also, when problems arise, as they tend to do, the agent can act as a mediator, telling the author when they are asking for something thats impossible, or fighting for the author when they feel they should. So yes, I think agents definitely earn the commission they make and are good for the author to have on their side. ACIve heard that many presses have stopped really considering over-the-transom submissions. Is that true at HarperCollins? JPSadly, there are just so many submissions coming in from agents, that we do not have time to also look at the un-agented materials that come in. ACIts said that the publishing industry has changed a lot in recent years, that some of the work once done by editors is now done by agents. How would you describe your role as an editor at HarperCollins? JPI personally love the editing process. Though agents do quite a bit of editing before they send the books out, theres usually still more work to be done. Working closely with the authors is for me, the best part of the job. But once the editing process is finished, my role changes from editor to salesperson and marketer. Like I said earlier, one of my main roles is to make sure everyone in the house knows the book and why it will appeal to audiences. ACCould you briefly explain what an author can expect once his or her novel has been accepted? JPOnce the book has been accepted, it generally takes 9 months before it is published. Within those 9months,the book is copyedited, designed, and proofed multiple times. The author will get to binnensee and approve the cover design and interior design and have a chance to see the flap copy. The editor should also send the book out to other authors for blurbs as soon as the manuscript is ready. About 3-4 months before publication, the marketing and publicity push will really get started. The publicist will do large galley mailings to all the publications he or she thinks the book is right for and pitch the book to radio shows, tv shows, and magazines. The marketing department might do large mailings to booksellers and bloggers, who are increasingly involved in bringing books to audiences. The best thing the author can do is write a letter to booksellers explaining the story behind the book and introducing themselves. Its also never too early for the author to start a website or MySpace page. ACDo you have any final advice for authors seeking to get published? JPNever stop writing and never stop submitting your work to agents and publishers. Ive seen some great writers get frustrated because they havent been offered a deal yet, but p erhaps their next book will be the one. I think its really helpful when writers join workshops or take a writing class. That way they can get the early criticism they need as well as make contacts in the writing world. Also, good authors are great readers. You should read as much as you can. And a little tip most authors thank their agents in the acknowledgments. If youre looking for an agent, check out books that are comparable to yours and see which agents represent them. This way you know which agents are interested in representing books like yours.

Fluff Is for Tabloids, Not Resumes

Fluff Is for Tabloids, Not Resumes Fluff Is for Tabloids, Not Resumes Fluff Is for Tabloids, Not Resumes I finally received my Certified Professional Resume Writer (CPRW) diploma this week, so I'm no longer the only writer on staff without that accreditation (woohoo!). But getting that piece of paper meant I had to update my blog bio to match. After a year of writing for the blog, I was itching to rewrite parts of the bio, anyway. When I was reading and rewriting the part that's supposed to make me sound like I've been doing this since I was born, I had a shocking revelation: I've only been out of college for three years. How much could I really have to say about my career when it's only been a career for 36 months? I noticed that my first bio was an ill attempt at making me sound as experienced as my fellow writers, even though they're years ahead of me on their career paths. What was I thinking? Where was the need to fill up as much white space as they did, when I don't have anything to fill it with? So I chopped and cut and reworded to focus more on what I'm doing now and how that benefits the blog, instead of adding fluff to exaggerate what I've done in the past. Because I realized that my old bio was doing just that, making my past two years of experience sound more impressive than they were. How so? Well, I claimed to have experience in the Education industrybut the only Education experience I had was through my college degree and the brief summer internship I did at a publishing company, neither of which qualify. That was the wrong approach. Take this revelation and apply it to your resume. You need experience to write a resume, and you need more than one job to fill a whole page of experience. But most of all, you need to let all the irrelevant fluff fall by the wayside, even if you can't fill a whole page. Case in point: If you're applying for a $50,000-a-year general engineering position, you're not going to put your job as a lifeguard at summer camp on your resume, just as you're not going to list building bridges out of toothpicks as one of your main skills. Most of all, don't make a big deal out of something that's not, and don't make it seem more professional than it was. Nobody starts out with years of experience, and no one will be fooled by your fluffed-up efforts to make it seem as if you did.

8 Tips for Parents Going Back to Work After a Baby - The Muse

8 Tips for Parents Going Back to Work After a Baby - The Muse 8 Tips for Parents Going Back to Work After a Baby Going back to work after having a baby is a big career (and life) switch. It isn’t exactly easy, balancing the needs of your child with likely way less sleep than you’re used to, while trying to be the same employee you were before you left. And having a baby changes the way you think about and prioritize your day, and can potentially make you question what you thought you wanted out of your career. It certainly did for me. Navigating those first few weeks back takes patience, self-care, and boundary setting, both at home and in the office. As I’m transitioning back to work for a second time (I recently took almost six months off in between leaving a long-term role and launching my own company), I’m pulling from my first experience returning from maternity leave three years ago and the community of incredible moms I’ve been blessed to be a part of for advice on making the transition out of parental leave as seamless as possible. 1. Be Patient With Yourself This is one of the best pieces of advice I got from my boss at the time. You don’t have to be perfect your first day back, your first week back, or really ever. This goes for parenting and your body, in addition to transitioning back to work. The advice is actually pretty universal. Give yourself some breathing room to get back in the swing of things. Don’t schedule big presentations or client meetings or say yes to big projects right off the bat if you can help it. If you can’t avoid taking on something big, try to find ways to move other items off your plate so you can give that one project your main focus. Do put blocks of time on your calendar to go through email and catch up on projects, reports, or anything else you missed while you were on leave. Note: You probably won’t get through all your emails in one sitting, and that’s OK. Try tackling the most important stuff first and get to the rest over the next few days. And schedule individual meetings or coffee dates with your team to hear what they’ve been working on and in general how they’re doing (this will be a nice break from all the work-information overload!). 2. Build Trust in Your Childcare If you have confidence that your little one is loved and cared for while you’re not there, you’re going to be a better, more relaxed person at work. So start looking for childcare early and take the time to get to know your caregiver(s) before you go back to the office. If you’re going the nanny route, try to have the person start one to two weeks before you go back, on a reduced schedule if possible. Play and interact with the baby together and run some errands where you’re only gone a couple hours to get used to the idea of being away. And take your nanny to lunch- sans baby- to get to know them outside of their role. If you’re doing a nanny share, schedule some family hangouts with both families before going back. And if you’re using a daycare, ask to shadow or observe, take advantage of the tour, and ask any and all questions. Again, have the baby start earlier than needed, potentially on a reduced schedule, so both you and baby can get used to the new setting. 3. Set Clear Boundaries With Your Team (and Yourself) I came back from my maternity leave to a reduced schedule, so I made sure to meet with my team to explain my hours and come up with new normals in our day, including how we could work together in a way that made sense and benefited everyone. The first few weeks I was back, I also started checking in with my team every day an hour before my new “end of work day” to get us all used to the schedule. Even if you don’t have a new routine, make sure your team’s aware of when you are and aren’t available online. It’s becoming more and more common for new parents to have flexible schedules in those first few weeks back to help ease the transition back to work. But in having more flexibility to work from home, I also had to navigate how to work from home. I experienced, and have heard from quite a few of my fellow parents, that it’s tough to be in both “parent” and “work” mode at the same time, so even at home I set boundaries with myself to try not to be both at once. When I was commuting, I always checked my email and handled anything that needed immediate attention before walking into my apartment so I could be fully tuned into my family when I stepped through the door. My phone and computer go in another room so I’m not checking them in front of my child or trying to respond to a client while making dinner (and so words like “fart” don’t end up in work emails- yes, I learned that from personal experience). If you’re looking for more tips, here’s advice for working from home as a parent. 4. Advocate for Your Needs (and Your Child’s) This advice, of course, transcends parenting and applies in all aspects of life, but it’s especially important after having a child. It’s simple: Ask for what you need and don’t assume people know what it is. You’d be surprised how much people will give you if you simply ask for it. Do you need a meeting moved so you can make pickup time at daycare? Present an alternative solution in your ask, but ask nonetheless. Are you not as available for after-hour client events? Advocate for a colleague to take your place, or suggest other creative ways to get in front of clients that fit into your schedule. Who knows, there could be other working parents who will appreciate your ingenuity. 5. Manage Expectations I don’t have to tell you that when you have a baby to get home to, you figure out quickly what’s actually important to get done- and that you need to set expectations in order to get those important items done on time. So when someone asks you to step in on a project, don’t be afraid to ask: When do you need this by? Is this a priority? How much time do you expect this to take? Then spell out exactly what you can and can’t do for them, clearly and directly: “I’d love to work on that, but since I have X to get done by the time I leave today and it’s not a huge priority, I won’t be able to get that to you until the end of the week. Does that timing work for you?” While you may not be able to please everyone, by being direct you cover your bases and show you’re proactive and dedicated to doing your job well. 6. Schedule Time to Pump If you need to pump breast milk at work, block off time on your calendar to do so, and add a 10-15 minute buffer to ensure you stick to your schedule. By slotting it into your day and really making it nonnegotiable (remember those boundaries we talked about earlier?), you can help keep it from being a point of stress. (And it’s not just about emotional distress: Skipping a pumping session can become physically painful, and you can end up wearing the consequences down your shirt.) If possible, get a second pump to leave at work to minimize lugging the gear back and forth, and make sure you have a comfortable space to pump in your office. If one’s not apparent in your workplace, explicitly ask HR or an office manager about a “lactation room.” Federal law states that an employer must provide both break time and “a place, other than a bathroom, that is shielded from view and free from intrusion from co-workers and the public” for nursing employees. Specifics can differ from state to state and based on office size, which is why it’s important to first determine what your office has in place before advocating for what you need. 7. Find Your Support Team Working parent guilt is real, and it comes in all shapes and sizes- guilt for being away from the baby, guilt for not feeling guilty for not being with the baby, guilt for saying “no” to a colleague so you can leave early to get back to the baby…the list goes on. When these thoughts start to creep in, repeat this to yourself: You are enough. And, find your community (whether inside or outside the office). Talk to other parents who have been through it and create a safe space to talk about how you’re feeling. A quick Google search of local parenting and mom groups will at the very least hook you up with Facebook groups where you can start connecting. (These groups can also be a good source for nanny shares.) Also, some hospitals put together parenting groups based on when your baby was born. Take advantage of “Baby and Me” classes in your neighborhood or town, too, from swimming lessons to local library reading sessions to group walks. I randomly ended up at a “mommy and me yoga” class, and after that class I went to lunch with three incredible women with babies the same age as mine. To this day (three years later) I still text with them weekly to talk about all things parenting, working, and babies. 8. Make Time for You- Just You While it may seem impossible to carve more time out of your day outside of family and work, you can’t be the parent or employee (or really insert anything here) you want to be if you don’t take care of yourself. When I take time for myself, I’m more present in every aspect of my life. I’ve learned that a present moment (even a short one) is worth a million hurried moments. Here’s how you can realistically make time for yourself during the week: Actually put lunch on your calendar- and step away from your desk (or turn off your computer) to eat. Keep up with that once a week yoga (or Pilates, or barre, or whatever) class- you’ll be grateful you did. Wake up an hour before you actually need to (and an hour before the baby) so you can do something just for you. It’s not for everyone (if you’re not a morning person please sleep in), but for me this way I can take my time drinking my coffee and curl up reading a good book. Above all remember: There are countless parents out there right now who’ve felt exactly how you feel and may still be trying to figure out how to do what’s best for them and their families. It’s a big deal going back to work after a baby, so hopefully it helps to know that you’re not alone, everything you’re feeling is valid, and it’s okay to be patient with yourself.

4 Reasons Follow Your Passion Is Bad Advice - The Muse

4 Reasons Follow Your Passion Is Bad Advice - The Muse 4 Reasons Follow Your Passion Is Bad Advice If you’ve ever told someone you don’t like your job, chances are the person responded by telling you to quit ASAP and just, like, start “following your passion.” And, even though your current position provides status and security, the world (or at least the internet) promises that you’ll be happier once you start “doing what you love.” While this push to follow your passion makes sense- after all, no one wants to spend years stuck in a cubicle doing tasks we dread- we rarely hear the other side of the argument. That’s why Ben Horowitz’s 2015 commencement speech at Columbia University titled “Don’t Follow Your Passion” surprised the audience. Horowitz, co-founder of venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz and one of Silicon Valley’s top investors, gave the unconventional advice that our futures shouldn’t be shaped by what we love. Here are his reasons: 1. Passions Are Difficult to Prioritize “Are you more passionate about math or engineering? Are you more passionate about history or literature? Are you more passionate about video games or K-Pop?” Horowitz asks. It’s usually difficult to answer these questions when you truly feel equally excited about two completely different things. On the other hand, Horowitz believes it’s much easier to determine what you’re good at. Are you better at math or writing? Most people can answer that in an instant. 2. Passions Change Over Time What Facebook pages did you “like” back in 2010? What pages have you liked recently? If the two are completely different, then you know what Horowitz means when he says that what you care about is always changing. “What you’re passionate about at 21 is not necessarily what you’re going to be passionate about at 40,” Horowitz explains. “This is true for boyfriends as well as career choices.” Even if you finally land the dream position that magically combines everything you love, there’s no guarantee that you’ll still be as crazy about it five years later. (Before you roll your eyes at how cynical this advice is, keep reading- Horowitz does provide an alternative that’ll make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.). 3. You’re Not Always Good at Your Passion As heartbreaking as it is to admit, sometimes we suck at what we love. Using the contestants on American Idol as an example, Horowitz says, “Just because you love singing doesn’t mean you should be a professional singer.” So, while there are ways to become better at your favorite hobbies (think: online classes and hands-on tutorials), oftentimes these beloved activities lead to you neglecting your real strengths. 4. Following Your Passion Is a “Me-Centered” View of the World Horowitz says that doing what you love is a self-centered view of the world because it focuses on what you take out of the world- whether that’s money, cars, accolades, or something else- rather than what you put into the world. According to the Silicon Valley investor, the latter is much more important. Yes, you can chase after your happiness. But what are you doing to help the more than seven billion other people in the world become happier, too? Hence, instead of following your passion, Horowitz recommends that you “follow your contribution.” “Find the thing you’re great at,” he says, “and put that into the world. Contribute to others and help the world be better- that is the thing to follow.” By pursuing your contribution, you instantly move from me-focused to them-focused. And who knows? You might even grow fonder of some of your current responsibilities because they’re helping you make small, positive dents in the universe. Photo of smudged heart drawing courtesy of Shutterstock.

5 Magic Words for Older Candidates

5 Magic Words for Older Candidates 5 Magic Words for Older Candidates Words to use on your resume, and in your interview, if you’re over 40 years old.Having served as a recruiter and career coach for a number of years, I talk with prospective candidates daily about their qualifications and engage in the development of their strategic search efforts. In our discussions, the candidate will usually make a comment about his age and the suspicion that the target company, “is probably looking for someone younger than me.”There seems to be a categorical opinion among the candidates that if they are older than 40, then they are automatically disqualified for the position. With this perspective, they will usually not even submit their resume. At the end of the day, the person responsible for the way that your age comes across to the hiring company is you. The five points below serve as a checklist of ways to serve up your age in a way that elevates your personal brand instead of diluting your candidacy. This way, you can be the champion in your search strat egy â€" not the casualty in this race for the job.1. Accomplished versus seasoned Your next employer is looking for someone who is a natural leader and knows the benefits of success, so the way that you market your experience on your resume must reflect your energy and commitment. To identify yourself as “seasoned” is essentially putting you in the category of a boring condiment on a burger. On the other hand, promoting your background as “accomplished” is defining a level of excellence that the hiring company will want.Additionally, as you develop your resume and list your accomplishments, you must be able to brand yourself as an individual who is a “key contributor” to a result instead of someone who “participated” in a specific task.2. Evidence versus claims Professional maturity is a critical element when showing your interest in a position. To be considered a suitable candidate to a certain company with their own particular corporate culture, you must be able to demonstrate your capability, drive and excellence in everything that you do.You can understand why a young start-up company may want a younger employee because of her energy and tenacity. You must admit that it can be appealing, but your contributions to the company are that of someone who will not panic when there is a decline in production or slump in cash flow. The younger, less experienced candidate may not be able to embrace the ebbs and flows of the market.Demonstrate this. Showcase your evidence-based background in your resume. No claims, just real, tangible feats. A candidate with a high resale value is the one who can communicate clearly while offering real examples of success and methodologies that have guided their career.3. Polish versus wipeWhen you consider the appreciation of your investments, such as your home, you’ll agree that there was a time in which you knew that your older home would still have a high resale value. If you were to put your older home on the m arket, there are probably some things that you would do in order to increase the curb appeal, or possibly upgrade some of the furnishings on the inside. As a candidate, you are no different. As you observe the younger candidates who may be applying to the same jobs that you are, you’ll notice that they take great pride in their appearance. This will often carry over into their perceived work habits, and in an instant, they will have the edge.If you intend to remain competitive in the selection process, you must be able to recognize that your “professional curb appeal” is especially critical when competing with the younger generation. Easy Ways to Manage Your Work Stress Today - The Muse

Easy Ways to Manage Your Work Stress Today - The Muse Easy Ways to Manage Your Work Stress Today Hey there. How’s your day going? Before you automatically blurt out, “Good!” or “It’s going!” like you usually do, take a deep breath, pause, and think about how you’re really doing. Lately, have you experienced any of the following: Troubling falling asleep? Trouble staying asleep? Weight gain (especially around your tummy)? Weakened immune system (i.e., getting sniffly all the time)? Low libido? Stomach pain or digestive issues? Panicky feelings or a racing heartbeat? Headaches and muscle aches? Cravings (especially for sugary and fatty foods)? Moodiness or feelings of anxiety? First things first, I apologize for sounding like a commercial. But if any of those sound familiar, you- like 80% of Americans- may be stressed out because of your job. And stress plus work is not a good mix. One recent study indicates that going to work when you’re sleep-deprived- a common side effect of chronic stress- is just as bad as going to work buzzed on a few drinks. Your judgment, focus, memory, and problem-solving abilities become impaired when you’re tired, run down, and well, stressed. Which means it isn’t just bad for your body on a physiological level; it could also derail your performance at work, clog up your creativity, and hold you back from getting an award, promotion, or pay raise. So what’s the solution? Can someone powerful just wave a magic wand over America and melt everyone’s stress levels away? That would be amazing- but, no. It’s up to you to learn how to manage your emotions and keep your stress levels in check. Fortunately, it’s actually not that hard to do. You brush and floss daily to prevent plaque from forming on your teeth; you can take steps to prevent anxiety from building up, too. Here are a few things you can do- starting tonight- to make tomorrow a much less stressful workday. Tonight: Release Pent-up Emotions A tension-free tomorrow begins today. Tonight, after work, make time to do whatever you need to do to release pent-up emotions in a safe way. Run. Journal. Punch a punching bag or a pillow. Hurl paint on a canvas. Sing at the top of your lungs. After a few minutes of the stress-relieving activity of choice, you’ll probably notice a shift in how you feel, as if a literal weight has been lifted. You’re already on your way to more relaxed workday tomorrow. Tomorrow Morning: Start Your Day With an Empowering Reminder When you wake up, tell yourself something like, “No matter what happens today, I am in charge of how I respond.” Remind yourself that you can’t control what other people do, but you can always- always- remain in charge of your own choices and responses. You can choose to munch chips in frustration as you race to meet a deadline, or you can opt to take a walk, clear your head, and then work calmly and steadily. You can choose to bottle up negative emotions, or you can elect to release them at the end of your workday- safely and in private. As your stress levels start to climb, life can sometimes feel out of control- but it’s not. You’re in charge. You’re always in charge. Remembering this simple fact can provide a lot of peace and relief. Throughout Your Workday: Schedule Deep Breathing Breaks The simple act of taking a few deep, full breaths can immediately lower the levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, in your body. Breathe and feel your anxiety levels drop. Breathe deeper- they’ll drop some more. This is one of the best stress-relief tools ever created, and it’s free and accessible at any time. You may find it helpful to set a timer and schedule a breathing break once an hour or so. See if you notice a difference in how you feel as you move through your day. At the End of Your Workday: Do an Emotional Check Once you get home from work, take a mental inventory of your day. Ask yourself, “How did I do?” “How am I feeling?” and “Did anything make me feel especially stressed today?” Mentally catalog or write down any situations that felt especially stressful, irritating, or anxiety-provoking. Then, later tonight, focus on releasing those emotions, just like you did last night. You’ll clear the decks for a good night’s sleep, unburdened by anxiety and negativity. And tomorrow? You can repeat these stress-management practices again. You can’t always prevent buses from running late, bosses from planning poorly, or colleagues from stealing your yogurt or taking credit for your hard work. Irritating things happen in life and at the office. That’s the reality of our imperfect world. But you can choose to take good care of yourself and develop healthy practices that keep you stress-free, even under the worst circumstances. Don't wait until your body has to scream to get your attention- with stomach pains, insomnia, or collapsing at your desk from stress-induced exhaustion. Take small steps to clear away stress every day. When you take care of your emotions and keep your feelings in check, you’ll be amazed at how much energy you have, how much you're able to achieve, and perhaps most importantly, how much more you enjoy your life and work. Common Questions Asked During Law Job Interviews

Common Questions Asked During Law Job Interviews Common Questions Asked During Law Job Interviews If you’re interviewing for law jobs, you’re probably wondering what type of questions you’ll be asked. Excellent question!   Employers are looking for a mix of hard and soft skills (including enthusiasm, humility, and curiosity) - skills and traits you want to display when answering common legal job interview questions.   Questions You’ll Often Be Asked Keep in mind that lawyers typically haven’t been trained in interviewing techniques so that you may get some odd questions on occasion. But, typically, you’ll be asked some or all of the following: How Do/Did You Like Law School?People ask this question because it’s simple to ask, and it’s an easy weeder question. If I’m interviewing someone who tells me with vehemence how much they hated law school, I’m probably not going to hire them for a legal job. The only appropriate answer to this question is some variant of, “In general, I enjoyed it and found it challenging. Of course, it was tough at times, but I learned enough to make it worthwhile.” Don’t be a Pollyanna (no one will believe that you loved every second of law school), but try to be generally upbeat about the experience.   What Were Your Favorite Law School Classes?Again, an easy question to ask that can be a minefield for the unprepared. It doesn’t matter how you respond to this, as long as the courses you offer have a reasonable relationship to the job you’re interviewing for. If you’re interviewing at a small law firm that only does civil cases, it’s suspicious if all of your favorite courses are criminal law and procedure. Perhaps you’re just interviewing here because you can’t get the job you want? (Which may be true, but isn’t the best impression to convey!) Before the interview, look over your transcript and think about what classes are most related to the work you’d be doing in the role you’re interviewing for. Easy - those are your favorite classes! What Type of Law Are You Interested In? If you’re interviewing for an entry-level position in a firm, or with a judge or certain internships, you might not be expected to have a strong interest in exactly the subject matter of the job on offer. However, you still need an answer prepared your elevator pitch to explain what type of law you eventually see yourself practicing. “I’m not sure,” is not a good answer! If you have to, make something up. But have a reasonable answer ready to go.Why Are You Leaving Your Current Job?If you have a job now, be prepared to explain why you’re leaving it. “I hate my boss,” is not a good answer. Be tactful, and focus on the growth opportunities the new role you’re interviewing for will permit (or focus on some other practical issue, such as the need to move to a new location). For example, “I enjoy the work I’m doing now, but I’d like to spend more time in court. That’s why this position handling contested child custody battles are perfect for me.” Tell Me About Your Note/Moot Court Competition BriefRemember that anything on your résumé is fair game for discussion! If you list a Law Review Note or even an undergraduate thesis project, be prepared to talk about it in detail. If it’s been years since you looked at your Note (or thought about the argument in your Moot Court competition), spend a few minutes getting back up to speed in case it comes up.Why Is This Job a Good Fit for You?It’s unlikely you’ll be asked this question directly, but it’s likely to be asked obliquely. (“Why Organization X?”) It is where you get to showcase the research you did on the organization and job description.  You want to show that a) you know what the job description requires and b) that you’re a good fit. For example, “I’m really excited about the mix of work in this position. I enjoy client interaction, so I’d like to help out with the weekly legal information booth. But I’d also like to improve my courtroom skills, and expand on the work I did in the family law clinic in law school, so the opportunity to handle regular motion hearings is appealing.” I See You Like Baking … What Type of Things Do You Like to Bake? The most important information on your résumé actually has nothing to do with law at all - it’s your hobbies and interests. If well selected, these can fill a good chunk of time in an interview and allow you to make a more human connection with the interviewer. However, you have to actually do these things! I once asked a candidate what kind of cooking he enjoyed, and he looked at me blankly until I showed him the Interests section of his résumé, which listed “cooking” as an interest. It turns out he didn’t cook at all, which was somewhat confusing (and made me wonder who wrote his résumé!).   What Is Your Opinion on the Holding of James v. Smith??Just kidding! You’ll hardly ever be asked substantive law questions in an interview. You might encounter “behavioral” questions along the lines of, “Tell me how you’d handle this situation with opposing counsel,” but you’ll almost never be quizzed on legal topics. So don’t stress over them. Whatever questions you’re asked in your law job interview, stay calm! Most interviewers will be reasonable, but some throwbacks enjoy making candidates squirm. If that happens, remember it’s a test, not a personal attack. Take a deep breath, focus on the question, and try to give a reasonable response.   If you encounter an aggressive interviewer, that’s simply one data point for the next critical analysis - what YOU should be paying attention to when you interview for legal jobs.
